The majority of those surveyed\u201485.5%\u2014reported following an omnivorous diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>9.5% of Italians now identify as \u201cveg.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of this group,<strong> 7.2% are vegetarian<\/strong>, while <strong>2.3% follow a vegan lifestyle<\/strong>. An additional 5% stated they had tried a vegetarian diet in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A notable shift is the 3% increase in vegetarians compared to last year, reversing the downward trend that began in 2021. This marks <strong>the highest figure recorded in the past decade<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The percentage of vegans, however, has remained steady since 2023. The figure, just below 2.5%, appears to have stabilised in the population, except for a dip in 2022.<strong> It&#8217;s worth noting that from 2014 to 2024, the percentage of vegans has quadrupled<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The survey also explored the benefits perceived by those who follow vegetarian or vegan diets. A large majority\u201486.4%\u2014reported feeling physically better, while 73.3% said it helped them maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, 66.5% noted they had become more creative in the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s important to point out that these results come from surveys and questionnaires, representing only a small portion of the population. As a result, <strong>the actual number of people choosing a plant-based diet may be underestimated<\/strong>. Based on the sales figures for vegan products and <strong>the growing number of 100% plant-based options that we see emerging and certify<\/strong>, this trend is likely more widespread than the survey suggests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Rise of \u201cFree-From\u201d Foods in Italy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The survey also looked at the growing popularity of \u201cfree-from\u201d foods in Italy\u2014those that <strong>exclude gluten, lactose, yeast, eggs, and sugar<\/strong>. These products are increasingly popular, even among those without specific intolerances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Lactose-free foods are the most popular, chosen by 30.9% of respondents<\/strong>. Interestingly, 19.8% of them aren\u2019t actually lactose intolerant, suggesting that many people are opting for these products for general health or preventative reasons. Sugar-free foods follow closely, with <strong>25% of people opting to reduce their sugar intake<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Gluten-free foods<\/strong> are chosen by 21% of respondents, a significant proportion that includes not only those with coeliac disease or gluten sensitivities but also people who choose a gluten-free diet for personal reasons. Foods free from yeast and eggs are also gaining attention, with 18.3% and 13.8% of respondents, respectively, selecting them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What\u2019s notable is that <strong>most consumers of these \u201cfree-from\u201d products have not been diagnosed with intolerances<\/strong>. Instead, <strong>they choose these items<\/strong> for various reasons, including the desire for a healthier diet, the prevention of allergies, and a growing focus on the quality of ingredients. This trend reflects an increasing awareness of health and wellness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ethical Concerns: Italians Say No to Hunting and Vivisection<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When it comes to animal welfare, Italians are strongly opposed to practices like vivisection and hunting. The majority of the population is <strong>against vivisection (76.6%)<\/strong>, <strong>hunting (72.9%)<\/strong>, the <strong>production and use of fur (78.3%)<\/strong>, and the <strong>use of animals in circuses (78.1%)<\/strong>.
