Are nail polishes vegan and cruelty-free?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The answer is, as is often the case, <\/span><b>not always<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Although the popularity of vegan cosmetics has significantly increased in recent years, and it is increasingly easy to find vegan-friendly manicure products, nail polishes can still contain animal-derived ingredients incompatible with the vegan choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are three <\/span><b>most common non-vegan ingredients in nail polishes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Carmine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: This is a red dye obtained from the corresponding insects \u2013 pregnant females \u2013 bred specifically for this purpose. The cochineals are left to die, dried in the sun, and<\/span><b> then crushed until pulverized<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Tens of thousands of cochineals are needed to produce just a few grams of dye. (INCI Name: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carmines<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Keratin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: This is a protein <\/span><b>derived from animal hair and horns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and is often found in products designed to strengthen nails and hair, including nail polishes. Vegan alternatives to this ingredient are derived from soy and almond oil. (INCI Name: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hydrolyzed Keratin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Guanine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: This is a pearly white dye, listed in the INCI with the code CI 75170 and can be of animal origin if derived from <\/span><b>fish scales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Its derivation may also be synthetic, but to be sure, it is necessary to contact the manufacturing company directly. (INCI Name: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lanolin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Vegan Nail Polishes? It&#8217;s Possible!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All these ingredients are not essential for producing a good nail product. In fact, more and more companies are producing <\/span><b>vegan nail polishes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in response to the increasing market demand.
